Trip Insurance

Travel insurance is usually some combination of two types of coverage: trip cancellation insurance and 24-hour emergency assistance services which cover the belongings you take with you on your trip in addition to protection in event of a medical emergency. Quite often, these losses are not fully covered by your credit card company, homeowner's policy, and/or medical insurance.

Many travelers assume their standard medical plan will cover them, yet few realize this is often not the case. For example, as stated on page 2 of your U.S. passport, Medicare does not cover health care costs outside the U.S. In addition, travel insurance providers can often break through language and currency barriers for international travellers, connecting you with qualified medical help.

Trip cancellation insurance covers reimbursement of the non-refunded portion of your travel investment if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason, such as if you or someone in your immediate family unexpectedly becomes ill, injured or dies and you can not take or continue your trip, or the airline suddenly goes out of business.

Travel insurance can provide reimbursement for unexpected travel expenses, including lost luggage, loss or damage to a rental car, expenses incurred due to travel delays or medical emergencies and emergency medical transportation.
Airlines only provide limited protection for your checked baggage and do not cover your carry-on items. Cruise lines and hotels offer little or no coverage. Homeowners or renters insurance may provide limited benefits or have a high deductible.

There are many different travel insurance plans offered by many different vendors, which enables you to choose a plan tailored to suit your own particular travel and budget needs. Ask your travel agent if you have difficulty determining which travel insurance is best for you.

Here are some links to a few travel insurance vendors on the web, just so you can get an idea what types of coverage are available. We don't endorse any particular one of these, we offer these links by way of examples. Your travel agent may suggest one of these or a different vendor based on your specific travel arrangements and needs.
